    Annual Giving 2010

     A message from the Principal

I am pleased to present this year’s annual giving projects. Every year we publicise a small number of fundraising initiatives and the funds raised are spent during the year, therefore having an immediate impact on today’s girls. This year’s projects, in addition to the Bursaries Fund, will support Art & Technology and Science. Both ideas have been suggested by committed staff, keen to enhance the girls’ experiences in their subject; I am sure that you will find their ideas stimulating. This year, our overall target is to raise £50,000.

Through the support of so many dedicated friends of College we have been able to realise previous goals: for example in October this year, our Author in residence, Adam O’Riordan takes up his post, the result of an earlier Annual Giving campaign.  I would like to thank each one of you for your loyalty and generosity to our annual appeal.  With your encouragement, today’s girls are able to benefit from these exciting initiatives.

I hope that you will feel able to support College. Your participation makes a difference and every gift is valued tremendously.

    Thank you.

    iMacs for Art

In order to provide the best art education for girls who would like to progress to creative careers, we need to enable them to speak ‘Mac’. Architects, designers, publishers and film-makers all expect those in the creative arts to be Mac-users.

Our aim is to purchase a suite of iMacs for the Art Library to enhance the facilities in the photo-editing and graphics suite. The impact will be immediate for girls throughout the school: image editing for course work, the manipulation of images for graphics, photography editing, and the design of brochures and posters will be transformed. One iMac, including network and printer, will cost £2,000; being able to purchase six would create the suite for the Art Library that would transform our teaching.

Art plays an intrinsic role in College life. We are blessed with gifted and dedicated staff who teach with passion and exuberance. For many of our girls, their experiences here foster a life-long appreciation of art, whether they continue with formal study or enjoy it for recreation.

For me, the iMAC isn’t a computer; it’s a specialised art tool, more like a paint-brush than a typewriter.  Please help to establish this significant technology as a standard for every aspect of Art at CLC.

    Practical Sciences

The skills acquired through practical experimentation in the sciences cannot be under-estimated. They enable students to reach conclusions through empirical observation and are one of the reasons that it is my aim to establish a university-level project club to provide support for those girls who would like to further their interest in practical chemistry.

This exciting new extra-curricular activity will show pupils how to carry out a variety of practical procedures, and to build their knowledge from basic functional group interconversions to more complex multistep synthesis.

Ultimately, it is my hope that this opportunity for practical learning will encourage more students to apply to university to read physical sciences. Participation in such a club would certainly demonstrate a desire to learn outside the syllabus and would, undoubtedly, strengthen sections of a UCAS form, and offer a unique edge at university interview.

The costs associated with setting up an activity such as this relate to the purchase of precision equipment needed for conducting complex experiments.  My experience is that such a club adds a unique dimension to learning for the girls, bridging the gap between A level and university. It will also foster the girls’ enthusiasm for their subject, and promote CLC’s excellent reputation in the Sciences.

    The Bursaries Fund

Those of us who are fortunate enough to be part of CLC, either as Guild members, parents or staff, understand implicitly what a College education means. It’s not just about superb teaching and facilities but about the diversity of friends you make and the range of opportunities available. We would like to continue to offer such advantages to any family who shares our belief in the transformative power of a good education, but who might not be able to consider a CLC education for their daughter without financial assistance.

Providing support for deserving students has always been a priority at College. Whether by partial or fully-funded awards, or for those families whose circumstances change during their daughter’s time at school, CLC has been able to help. In recent years we have increased the funds available and in 2009/10 we are able to support a total of 56 girls in some way. We have achieved this through careful financial management and the generosity of our donors.

Many of you have supported us, for which we thank you very much. Please help us to continue our progress this year and further strengthen our bursary funding programme.

    Wherever College needs it most

Gifts made in this category help to enable us to complete as many of this year’s projects as possible. At the end of the academic year, we entrust College leaders, with guidance from the Leadership Team, to allocate funds raised to each of the projects advertised. We report back on our results in College literature and on the website in the following academic year.
